The More You Know

January 31, 2013 | By

You might remember a television short called ‘The More You Know’ part of NBC’s educational public service campaign. The purpose was to motivate and compel individuals to take action and create change in their lives and communities. Over the span of two decades prominent NBC talent like Alec Baldwin, Carson Daly, and Kourtney Kardashian took the stage to encourage young people to pursue knowledge because the more you know the more impact you can have.

Knowledge is certainly power in our world. The more you know the greater edge you have, the greater opportunity for success, and often the greater change you can make. Knowledge is a precious jewel and something you must work for. But even knowledge– something intangible and so powerful –like everything else, fades compared to the glory of God. The ultimate end of knowledge far surpasses NBC’s campaign goal. Knowledge ultimately finds its purpose in knowing God and making him known.

Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13:8-12 that all knowledge that can be acquired on this side of heaven is lacking. What we think we know in regards to life, success, science, and achievement in this world with having the best education pales in comparison to the hope and joy awaiting those that earnestly seek after the education (knowledge) of God. As believers God is re-educating us for a new culture, a new sociopolitical structure, a new kingdom, a new age for humanity in Jesus that will never pass away. If you think education is power and invest all your life to be the expert of a particular field and yet miss out on knowing God, you will incur an eternal shame and regret.

So how do we live in two worlds? How do we live as students that need to learn and be successful in this life and yet be successful in the life to come? We put everything in its proper place compared to knowing God. Since even education will pass away when we see God face to face, lets give education its proper place on our priority list. Let’s use education to bring greater glory to God. Let’s use our education to serve others and point them to the God of all knowledge. The Bible says that in whatever you do, in word or deed, do all for the glory of God (Col 3:17). Make that your aim in all that you do. In every textbook that you crack open, in every website that you browse on, in every classroom you start your day, in every profession you serve, pursue knowledge for God’s glory!
